Course objectives:
The course is concerned with an introduction to the fundamental laws underlying physics and having general application in different areas of science. Kinematics, Classical Mechanics and Rigid Body Dynamics are treated quantitatively with a special emphasis on problem solving, in order to apply fundamental physical concepts to idealized, practical problems. 

Tables of contents:
INTRODUCTION: The scientific method. Vectors algebra and elements of calculus. Physical quantities: units and dimensions; physics measurements and uncertainties; statistical analysis of a physical measurement; dimensional analysis of a physical law. KINEMATICS: kinematics in one dimension: average and instantaneous velocity and acceleration. Uniform and uniformly accelerated linear motion, harmonic motion, dumped motion. Two dimensional motion: normal and tangential acceleration, Circular and projectile motion. NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION: The principle of inertia and the inertial frames; force and acceleration: the second Newton’s law, relativity principle; the third Newton’s law; non inertial frame dynamics. DYNAMICS CONCEPTS: momentum conservation, angular momentum and torque; work and power; work-energy theorem, conservative forces, potential energy and energy conservation law; static equilibrium. FORCES IN MECHANICS: normal forces; static, kinetic and fluid frictions; elastic forces, simple harmonic motions and dumped oscillations. The simple pendulum. DYNAMICS OF MULTIPARTICLE SYSTEMS: total linear momentum, angular momentum  and kinetic energy.  Center  of mass theorem. Koenig's theorems. RIGID BODY DYNAMICS: angular momentum and momentum of inertia, parallel axis theorem, rotational motion of a rigid body; first and the second cardinal equations; conservation laws, equilibrium of a rigid body.
